What type of boiler do you have?
Is there a government grant for gas boiler replacement?
Yes, there is. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is part of ECO4 funding. The current scheme is administered by Ofgem. Various grants are available through the project, including insulation and low-carbon heating. ECO4 is open to homes in England, Scotland and Wales.
The basic eligibility criteria include being a homeowner or tenant and receiving income-related benefits. However, the requirements change depending on the grant scheme you're applying for. You could still apply to your local authority through the LAFlex or LADS schemes if you don't receive benefits.
Boiler Upgrade Scheme
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is part of the latest round of Energy Company Obligation (ECO) funding. You could be eligible to claim a grant for gas boiler replacement of up to £7,500 if you meet the criteria:
You’re a homeowner or private tenant.
You’re replacing a fossil fuel heating system.
You intend to install the new system on or after April 1st, 2022.
Your home has an EPC with no outstanding cavity wall or loft insulation recommendations.
You won’t be able to use the grant for a new build or social housing. And the scheme doesn’t cover hybrid heating systems.
Applying is a straightforward three-step process:
- Contact an MSC-approved installer.
- Your installer confirms your eligibility.
- You’ll agree on a quote, and your installer applies to Ofgem.
Warmer Homes (Scotland)

Nest (Wales)

While the following schemes are now closed, it can be helpful to know a little about these grants. It can help us understand what the trajectory for heating grants has been, what’s worked, and how these schemes are likely to develop or change in the future.
ECO new boiler grant scheme – [closed]
The Home Heat Cost Reduction Obligation provided qualifying households with a free new gas boiler grant. The aim was to replace older-style boilers with a new A-rated system, helping to save low-income households money. The amount of funding available depended on the energy efficiency of a property.
This ECO-funded gas boiler scheme ran from 2012 to 2022.
Boiler scrappage scheme – [closed]
The Boiler Scrappage Scheme gave homeowners a £400 voucher to scrap and replace their G-rated gas boilers. Energy companies matched this amount for a total saving of £800 on the replacement boiler cost.
The Boiler Scrappage scheme was launched in 2009 and closed a few months later after all the vouchers were claimed.

Look out for boiler financing schemes to help you spread the cost. Most major suppliers offer 0% financing with Buy Now, Pay Later.
