How to become a physical therapist assistant?
The road to becoming a physical therapist assistant (PTA) generally starts with completing an accredited associate’s degree program in physical therapy. Upon completing the degree, PTAs must then pass a licensure exam to become licensed or certified in their state. Oklahoma currently offers 3 physical therapy assistant programs that have been accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE). These programs are offered at the following schools: â€¢ Oklahoma State University – Okmulgee â€¢ Tulsa Community College â€¢ Meridian Technology Center To be eligible for admission into an accredited PTA program, individuals must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Some programs may also require prerequisite coursework in biology, chemistry, psychology, and math. Once admitted into a PTA program, students will complete coursework and clinical rotations to prepare them for their future career. Coursework generally includes topics such as human anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, and medical terminology. Clinical rotations give students the opportunity to apply the knowledge they’ve learned in the classroom to real-world settings. After successfully completing an accredited PTA program, graduates must then pass the National Physical Therapy Examination (NPTE) to become licensed or certified in their state.
