Are you in the market for new windows? If so, you’re probably wondering how much they cost. Whether you need to sort out a broken pane or want to upgrade to double or triple glazing, replacement windows can vary in price depending on a variety of factors – from size and style to material. Keep reading to learn more about the cost of replacement windows and what to expect when you’re shopping around.

Costs associated with replacement windows

When it comes to replacement windows, there are several areas of cost to consider. Knowing about these factors can help you estimate the price of your new windows and budget accordingly.

Materials

There are three main types of replacement window frames: wood, composite, and vinyl or uPVC – and each will set you back a different amount. Usually, wood is the most expensive option, followed by composite and then vinyl or uPVC. You can also get aluminium frames, which cost around 25% more than uPVC window options.

You’ll also need to decide what level of glazing you’d like for your window panes. Double glazing is a popular choice but if noise reduction is a priority, you might want to consider triple glazed windows.

Style

The style of window you choose will also impact the price. Which is best for your home? Some of the most popular window styles include:

  • Casement windows – these are easy to operate and provide a clear view of the outside. Casement windows are also relatively affordable, with uPVC options starting at £500 per unit.

  • Tilt and turn window – ideal for ventilation, these windows open in two ways. Firstly, you can tilt the top of the window open to let a breeze in. You can also open the window fully by turning the handle, which allows the window to be fully opened. As you can’t open tilt and turn windows from the outside, they’re very secure. Price-wise, these windows cost about 25% more than casement windows.

  • Sash window – for an elegant and traditional look, you might want to opt for a sash window. This window type is made up of two or more movable panels (called sashes) that slide up and down to open and close the window. They tend to start from around £750 per unit, depending on material.

  • Bay window – this window style protrudes from the exterior of a building. They offer extra light and space and can be a charming addition. Bay windows also tend to be more expensive than other styles. Most cost 100-150% more than casement windows.

Size

What size windows do you need? Smaller windows, such as those for an en-suite bathroom will cost less than larger windows. Many window suppliers offer calculation tools, so you can get an accurate idea of how much the window you need will cost.

Number of replacement windows

Are you replacing one broken window or upgrading your entire property? As you can imagine, the more windows you need to replace, the more you can expect to pay.

Installation

Once you’ve chosen your new windows, you’ll need to arrange installation. The cost of this can vary depending on the professional’s experience, the window size and location, and your location. For example, if you need window installation in London, labour fees will likely be higher than those in other parts of the country.

When getting a quote from a window supplier, make sure the price stated covers full installation – including all fixings, sealants, and trims. It’s also a good idea to check whether your replacement window provider will dispose of your old frames and panes.

Any modifications to the property

Installation fees can also vary depending on additional work that may be required. For instance, will you need to set up scaffolding for the installer to reach a high window?

Average replacement window costs in the UK

As of 2022, the average price for new windows in the UK ranges considerably. You can expect to pay anything between £500 and £3200 per window, depending on the factors discussed above.

As for installation, a window fitter’s typical daily rate is around £150 to £175 (plus VAT).
